Smells like gear oil, eh? Sounds like the housing AND third member cracked in half like mine did after doing kinda the same thing.
ya well its a 3 wheel drive now… new front axle and locked up in the rear
yep thats what happened. thats what you get with an aluminium axle housing… the axles out of the XL-7′s are cast iron… direct fit… but needs larger passenger side axle shaft for 94 and older (95 and up have the larger axle shaft)
I don’t know how much those XL-7 housings are (don’t know why I don’t. I live 20 minutes from Trail Tough AND Hawk), but I hate breaking a $20 housing, which leads to a $100 set of 5.12′s. Might be worth the money.
you seem to know these trucks pretty well, i wanna get rid of the aluminum housing on mine so i can put in a locker in and not have it bust the housing. so could you tell me what i need to change it on an 89 sidekick? thanks, i really appreciate if you can help.
the case on the CV joint is aluminum which probably broke.
